Description

This First Day Cover features a vividly illustrated stamp depicting four male portraits against a world map background, surrounded by tropical foliage. The stamp is framed with a golden border. The inscription "Académie des Sciences d’Outre Mer" (Academy of Overseas Sciences) is clearly visible, as are the words "PREMIER JOUR D’ÉMISSION" (First Day of Issue) and "FIRST DAY COVER" printed in purple on the envelope.

Two postmarks are clearly visible on the displayed side. They state: "ACADÉMIE DES SCIENCES D’OUTRE MER 50e ANNIVERSAIRE PREMIER JOUR 26 MAI 1973 PARIS" (ACADEMY OF OVERSEAS SCIENCES 50th ANNIVERSARY FIRST DAY MAY 26 1973 PARIS). A specific "FIRST DAY COVER" postmark with a stylized monogram is also affixed in the upper right, confirming the authenticity of the First Day Cover.

The envelope is protected by a transparent plastic sleeve, which helps preserve its condition. The envelope paper appears white, with no apparent yellowing on the visible part, and the imprints remain clear and well-contrasted. A small handwritten insert indicates "10F," likely an old price or classification tag.

The large-sized stamp is typical of French commemorative issues from the 1970s, featuring graphic work highlighting scientific and geographical diversity. The overall presentation is very neat, enhanced by the juxtaposition of the various postmarks and specific First Day Philately notations.

Condition

Used item sold as is. The visible envelope appears to be in good overall condition, protected in a sleeve, with no apparent tears or stains on the displayed side. The colors of the stamp remain vibrant, and the postmarks are clearly legible.

Did you know? First Day Covers (FDC) are philatelic items characterized by being postmarked on the same day the stamp is officially released. The Académie des Sciences d'Outre-Mer (Academy of Overseas Sciences), founded in 1922 in Paris, celebrates its 50th anniversary here with this commemorative stamp issued on May 26, 1973.
