Description

Illustrated First Day Cover (FDC), visible in a protective plastic sleeve. The envelope commemorates the centenary of the death of Auguste Comte (1798-1857), as indicated by the inscription printed on the front: "CENTENAIRE DE LA MORT D'AUGUSTE COMTE 1798-1857" (CENTENARY OF THE DEATH OF AUGUSTE COMTE 1798-1857).

The left side of the envelope features a detailed illustration in blue, red, and gold: a sculpted monument, topped with a bust and allegorical figures, as well as a tricolor coat of arms in the upper left. The inscriptions "PREMIER JOUR D'ÉMISSION N° 207" (FIRST DAY OF ISSUE N° 207) and "HISTORIQUE OFFICIELLE" (OFFICIAL HISTORY) are visible in gold and red letters. The bilingual mention "FIRST DAY COVER" also appears.

A postage stamp bearing the effigy of Auguste Comte is affixed to the right, canceled by a clearly legible circular postmark: "PREMIER JOUR AUGUSTE COMTE 14 SEP. 57 MONTPELLIER" (FIRST DAY AUGUSTE COMTE 14 SEP. 57 MONTPELLIER). This cancellation confirms the date the envelope was put into circulation during the official ceremony in Montpellier, a city associated with Auguste Comte.

The bottom of the envelope shows a typed address to a recipient in Le Mans. The entire visible front is in good apparent condition, under plastic protection, with some visible creases on the sleeve, without prejudging the exact condition of the paper inside.

The colors of the illustration are well-preserved, alternating deep blue, bright red, and golden touches, which highlights the commemorative graphics typical of French First Day Covers from the 1950s.

Used item sold as is. Protective plastic sleeve shows visible creases. The envelope, stamp, and cancellation are clearly legible on the visible front. No major apparent defect on the presented side; the condition of the back or interior is not described.

Did you know? First Day Covers are specially issued to mark the first day a stamp is put into circulation. On September 14, 1957, the French Post Office issued this stamp bearing the effigy of Auguste Comte, founder of positivism, on the occasion of the centenary of his death. These envelopes are often illustrated and bear a unique commemorative postmark from the day of issue.
