Description
This First Day Cover features a vibrant illustration of Eugène Delacroix's famous painting "Liberty Leading the People," reproduced in print with a gilded frame. The scene, emblematic of 19th-century art, covers a large portion of the front. The entire piece is presented in a clear plastic sleeve, effectively protecting the item.
In the upper right corner is a French stamp bearing the likeness of Delacroix, accompanied by two "LIBERTÉ PARIS" First Day postmarks dated June 1, 1983. The postmarks are clear, with the inscription "PREMIER JOUR D'ÉMISSION" (First Day of Issue) and the representation of a female profile, typical of Marianne, symbolizing the French Republic. The purple stamp bears the inscription "DELACROIX" and a face value of 1.00.
On the margin of the illustration, the inscriptions "Eugène DELACROIX" and "Liberty Leading the People (Louvre Museum)" confirm the subject and origin of the visual. In the lower left, the mention "PHOTO LAUROS-GIRAUDON" indicates the photographic credit for the reproduction.
The medium is a matte white paper, with black printed inscriptions and a simple and elegant presentation. A box at the top indicates "MODÈLE DÉPOSÉ EXCLUSIVITÉ O.C.F.," specifying the official nature of this philatelic envelope. A small numbered square "457" appears in the lower left, suggesting a limited edition or internal reference.
The envelope is preserved in a plastic sleeve, protecting it from dust and handling. No major defects are visible on the presented side; the whole piece appears remarkably fresh for a philatelic item from that period.
Condition
Used item, sold as is. The visible side in the photo shows no tears, stains, or marked creases. Protective plastic sleeve included.
Did you know? A First Day Cover marks the very first official circulation of a stamp. This practice, very common in philately, allows for the association of a thematic illustration, a stamp, and a commemorative postmark with a specific date. Delacroix's painting "Liberty Leading the People" was created in 1830 and is exhibited at the Louvre Museum in Paris.
