First Day Cover Versailles 1970 FDC Philately Stamp France
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
This First Day Cover (FDC) features the Palace of Versailles and a historical French figure, identifiable on the illustrated front by a portrait in period costume set against the palace's architecture. The full-color illustration displays rich details: the central figure wears a wig and a feathered hat, typical of the 17th century, against a backdrop clearly showing the gardens and façade of the Palace of Versailles. The artwork is signed "Jeanin" in the bottom right corner of the illustration.
The envelope is franked with a French stamp, cancelled with the "Premier Jour" (First Day) postmark dated October 17, 1970, in Versailles (78). The postmark also depicts a portrait and the palace, echoing the theme of the main illustration. The inscription "PREMIER JOUR D’ÉMISSION – HISTORIQUE – F.D.C." (FIRST DAY OF ISSUE – HISTORICAL – F.D.C.) and the number "No 758" are located in the upper left corner of the envelope.
Presented in a transparent plastic sleeve, the envelope appears to be in very good condition. No creases, stains, or snags are visible on the photographed side. A small handwritten note "12F" is affixed to the sleeve, likely an old price tag or internal reference.
The entire piece is characterized by clear printing, well-preserved colors, and precise details on both the stamp and the illustration. This type of First Day Cover is sought after for its print quality and thematic interest, here centered on an emblematic monument and a figure from French history.
Condition
Used item, sold as is. The envelope shown in the photo appears in very good overall condition, preserved in a plastic sleeve, with no apparent defects on the illustrated side.
Did you know? The "Premier Jour d’Émission" (FDC) postmark indicates that the stamp was cancelled on its very first day of issue, giving the envelope special philatelic value. The Palace of Versailles, built under Louis XIV, is a symbol of French heritage and frequently appears on national philatelic issues.
