Description

This illustrated sheet is a First Day Sheet (or "CEF sheet") dedicated to typography, published by the French philatelic service. The item features a large black and white illustration, enhanced with touches of color (blue and red), highlighting a stylized portrait of a typographer, graphic elements related to typographic composition, and a grid evoking traditional typographic layout.

The sheet is titled "LA TYPOGRAPHIE" (TYPOGRAPHY) at the top, with a long explanatory text printed in French, relating the history and techniques of typography from the Middle Ages to the modern era. The text is framed by a black line, adding an elegant finish to the whole. A discreet signature "Raymond GID" appears at the bottom right, indicating the author of the illustration and the stamp.

At the bottom right of the sheet is a French postage stamp with a face value of 5.00 francs, illustrated by the same artist in a style consistent with the rest of the sheet. The stamp bears the mention "TYPOGRAPHIE" and is canceled with a First Day postmark dated Paris, legible next to the drawn portrait. The sheet also bears the issue number "3077" at the bottom left, as well as the mention "N° 898 du catalogue CEF" on the side border.

The main colors are black, white, blue, and red, with a neat presentation on cardboard paper. The whole is typical of CEF philatelic sheets, designed to showcase both the stamp and the historical or technical theme addressed.

The printed text, clearly legible, explains the evolution of typographic characters, notably mentioning famous fonts such as Garamond, Elzévir, Baskerville, or Didot, and briefly traces the history of printing and writing in Europe.

Condition

Used item, sold as is. This sheet has a clean surface, with no major visible defects in the photo. The corners and edges appear sharp, the overall presentation is very neat.

Did you know? Modern typography finds its roots in the invention of movable type printing by Gutenberg in the 15th century. Great names in typographic design in France, such as Garamond or Didot, helped shape the aesthetics of print and remain global references in font creation.
