AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
This official philatelic sheet pays tribute to Henri Mondor (1885-1962), a prominent figure in French medicine and literature. The visible side features a meticulously designed graphic composition, blending a black and white illustration of old books, writing quills, manuscripts, and the handwritten inscription "Grands Médecins Français" (Great French Physicians). The header bears the discreet watermark "Français Collection Historique du Timbre-Poste" (French Historical Stamp Collection) at the top of the sheet.
In the central part, the name "HENRI MONDOR" and his birth and death dates are printed in black capital letters on a white background. The bottom of the sheet offers a detailed biographical text outlining Henri Mondor's career and contributions in the field of surgery and literature, using a fine and legible typography.
Two philatelic elements are visible: on the left and right, stamp impressions featuring Henri Mondor, accompanied by a commemorative "1st day" postmark dated May 15, 1982, in Saint-Cernin, Cantal. The stamps are integrated into the graphic presentation and depict the professor's portrait, surrounded by stylized medical elements. The official circular postmark highlights the historical and commemorative aspect of this sheet.
The fine-textured support provides a slightly satin appearance and enhances the print quality. The sheet is cut to a rectangular format, with straight corners, and the visible side shows no major stains or apparent tears, only possible micro-wear related to handling from the period (see photo).
At the bottom, a note states: "Official Philatelic Document published by the Postal Administration and the Stamp Media Library. Reproduction prohibited."
Condition
Used item sold as is. The visible surface shows good overall preservation with minimal signs of age-related wear, with no apparent major defects on the photographed side.
Did you know? Henri Mondor, surgeon and medical historian, was also a member of the Académie française and the Académie des sciences. He gave his name to several medical entities, including "Mondor's disease," a rare condition affecting superficial veins.
