Description

This illustrated philatelic sheet, issued by the CEF (Courrier d’Entreprise France), honors the 1984 European Parliament elections. The main part features a modern graphic composition by René Dessirier, depicting the flags of the European Community member countries at that time. The overall design is dominated by blue, green, and yellow tones, with a dynamic arrangement of flags on a stylized background, evoking European unity and diversity.

The sheet includes a stamp with a face value of 2.00 francs, featuring the emblem of the European Parliament surrounded by golden laurels, captioned "Élections au Parlement Européen" (European Parliament Elections). A perfectly legible round postmark indicates the first day of issue: March 14, 1984, in Strasbourg. The whole is presented on a white cardboard backing, bordered by a dark brown line, and accompanied by an explanatory text detailing the context of the European elections and the major institutional roles of the Community.

On the left edge of the sheet, you can find the official CEF identification, the series number (CEF catalog N° 716), the mention of the Bureau Commercial des Timbres et Figurines (Commercial Office for Stamps and Figurines), as well as the individual copy number (here, 8580). This typical presentation of CEF first-day sheets guarantees its authenticity in the French philatelic category.

The vibrant colors and sophisticated graphics of the visual highlight the commemorative and educational aspects of this document, intended to celebrate a key moment in European institutional history. The sheet is specially designed for enthusiasts of thematic philately, postal history, and major European events.

The text printed on the front, in French, details the composition of the European Parliament, its main bodies, and the functioning of the Community at that time. The name of the illustrator, René Dessirier, is also noted at the bottom left of the illustration.

Condition

Did you know? The European Parliament is the only institution of the European Union elected by direct universal suffrage. The first election was held in 1979, making Europe one of the few transnational entities to have a democratically elected legislative assembly from that period.
