Description

This CEF philatelic souvenir sheet honors François Arago, a major scientific and political figure of the 19th century. The visible side features a color illustration by René Quillivic, depicting a portrait of François Arago against a blue background, with the Cygnus constellation (Cyg) and several stylized yellow stars. Below, the inscription "Les Hommes Célèbres – François ARAGO" is clearly legible, followed by the mention of the illustrator and engraver.

To the right of the souvenir sheet, a detailed text traces François Arago's biography, his scientific work, and his republican commitment. It also includes a stamp bearing Arago's effigy, accompanied by a "First Day" postmark dated February 22, 1986, from Estagel, attesting to the commemorative and philatelic nature of this piece. The stamp reiterates François Arago's portrait, surrounded by the mentions "180 – FRANÇOIS ARAGO – 1786-1853" as well as the CEF logo.

The souvenir sheet presents an elegant composition, with fine borders and a neat layout typical of CEF issues. The white cardboard support provides a sharp contrast with the inks used, highlighting the details of the drawing and text. The reference number "3856" is visible at the bottom left, and the CEF catalog mention appears on the lateral border.

The visible part shows no obvious signs of wear, folds, or apparent stains. The colors of the souvenir sheet and the stamp remain vibrant, and the printing of both text and illustrations remains crisp. The whole indicates a satisfactory state of preservation for a philatelic piece from this period.

This souvenir sheet illustrates the encounter between the art of philatelic engraving and the valorization of French scientific heritage, through a meticulous presentation and a tribute to François Arago. It is an ideal medium for showcasing a commemorative stamp within a "Les Hommes Célèbres" theme.
