Description

This large decorative wall plate features particularly elaborate relief work, illustrating a tavern or banquet scene of Flemish or Dutch inspiration. The piece is finished in golden brass, with a uniform patina revealing some darker nuances in the hollows of the relief. The decor highlights five characters seated around a table: three men wearing wide-brimmed hats and ruffs, a woman in draped clothing on the left, and another man on the right. The scene depicts various finely detailed table objects (decanters, goblets, a bottle), as well as a dresser in the background with plates, pots, and candlesticks. The relief is marked by a wealth of details, particularly in the folds of the clothing, the expressions on the faces, and the rustic furniture.

The plate is circular, with a slightly protruding rim that frames the composition. The background, adorned with stylized woodwork, reinforces the atmosphere of an old interior. The floral motifs and objects visible on the shelf add to the authenticity and depth of the scene. The artist's signature appears discreetly in the lower right part of the relief, confirming a signed work (detail visible but difficult to read in the photo).

The surface has a finely hammered and chased texture, typical of brass decorative plates from the early or mid-20th century. The piece is designed to be hung on the wall, although the hanging system is not visible on this side.

The style evokes genre scenes popular in European decorative art, particularly those inspired by 17th-century Flemish or Dutch painting. The dynamic composition, rustic furniture, and ruffed costumes are all characteristic elements of this movement.

Condition

Second-hand item sold as is. The plate has a uniform patina, with some visible signs of wear on the reliefs and slight traces of friction on the surface. No major chips or deformations are visible on the presented side.

Did you know? Repoussé brass decorative plates were very successful in Europe from the late 19th century onwards, particularly for wall decoration in bourgeois and rustic interiors. They often feature scenes of daily life inspired by Flemish masters, whose compositions were highly appreciated for their realism and narrative richness.
