Description

Old handwritten letter dated 1940, accompanied by its original envelope with legible stamps and postmark. The envelope, addressed to "Mademoiselle Geneviève Blanc, 470 Rue de Rome, Marseille, France", bears two British stamps (one green and one red) featuring King George VI and a postmark dated from the Second World War period. The reverse is not visible.

The letter features an illustrated page in English, highlighting the section "Can You Hear Me, Mother? SANDY POWELL’S Weekly Chat". It shows a portrait of Sandy Powell, a British comedian, as well as an illustration signed by G.S. Sherwood. The printed text is typical of English press or correspondence from the first half of the 20th century. No handwritten text is visible on the shown side, but the item is presented as an old handwritten letter in the keywords.

The visible media show an aged patina, with slight yellowing of the paper, testifying to their age. The corners of the letter and envelope appear intact, with no tears or major creases visible on the front. The ink of the stamps and postmark remains well-contrasted, and the calligraphy of the address is neat, typical of personal mail from that era.

The presentation in the photo highlights the historical character of the ensemble, with a background of old books that emphasizes the authenticity and heritage dimension of the correspondence. The general appearance evokes private correspondence during the Second World War, a period during which international postal exchanges were rare and precious.

The illustrated letter and envelope offer material evidence of daily life and personal exchanges during the 1940 period, directly related to World War II (WW2). The visible graphic and typographic elements are characteristic of the 1940s.

Condition

Used item, sold as is. Normal signs of wear related to age, slight marks on the paper. See photos for more details on presentation and preservation.

Did you know? During the Second World War, postal exchanges between France and the United Kingdom were subject to strict censorship and numerous controls. Stamps featuring George VI, like those visible on this envelope, were issued in the United Kingdom from 1937 to 1952, and are often used as a chronological marker to date correspondence from that era.
