Description
Antique letter, period handwritten envelope, presented in a transparent protective sleeve. The item shown in the photo is an envelope addressed to a recipient identified as "Monsieur Allieu, propriétaire, Trianon". The writing is in black ink, in a cursive style characteristic of the 19th century. The front of the envelope has a round postal stamp, partially legible, indicating "ENVIRIA 2 NOV 1852", as well as handwritten postal markings. The paper surface shows a slightly ivory tint, typical of materials used in the mid-19th century.
The cancellation stamp, clearly visible on the left side, attests to a mailing dated November 2, 1852, which precisely places the item in the first half of the 19th century. The handwritten tracing and inscriptions are well preserved and clearly legible on the visible part. No postage stamp appears, which corresponds to common practice before the widespread use of stamps in France or certain administrative or local correspondence of the time.
The envelope format is rectangular, with a horizontal layout. The paper shows some signs of wear and ripple, visible under the plastic sleeve, without affecting the legibility of the address or the stamp. The item is protected by a transparent sleeve, placed on a black background to highlight contrasts and facilitate observation of the inscriptions.
The handwritten mention "Garde Nue" appears below the postal stamp, and the handwritten number "490" appears in the upper right corner. A small "1852" label is placed on the sleeve, top left, to indicate the year of the letter. The calligraphy style, inks, and stamp are typical of administrative or private correspondence in France during this period.
The graphic details, the fineness of the writing, and the presence of the dated stamp make it a postal document of interest for postal history and French philately. The envelope shows a beautiful patina, without tears or major visible stains on the exposed face.
Condition
Used item, sold as is. The envelope shows signs of wear and ripples on the paper, consistent with its age, but remains in good general condition for a piece from this era. Protected under plastic sleeve.
Did you know? The manual date stamp visible on this letter, dated 1852, testifies to a method of cancellation used before the widespread use of postage stamps in France. Round date stamps, often associated with administrative or private letters, allow for precise tracing of the route and mailing period of a letter.
