Description
Large antique book, presented here in a period hardback binding, titled "La Belle Arlésienne" by Maurice Jogand on the spine. The cover visible in the image is full dark leather or cardboard with a patinated appearance, with fine gilding on the spine, typical of 19th-century editions. The book is placed closed, revealing a browned, time-worn top edge, as well as a worn upper cover, showing numerous scuff marks, scratches, and areas of wear, characteristic of long use. The corners are blunted, and the spine, with raised bands, displays gilding and inscriptions still partially legible: "Jogand" and "La Belle Arlésienne."
The binding has a robust structure, with visible signs of aging, particularly a damaged lower right corner and a slightly damaged headcap. The book appears voluminous, consistent with the "1200 pages" mentioned in the keywords, and its imposing format is highlighted by the perspective on the solid wood table. No decoration or illustration is visible on the cover, which maintains an elegant sobriety, characteristic of old and scholastic or encyclopedic editions from the late 19th century.
The scene is illuminated by natural light from a window, highlighting the texture of the leather or cardboard and the general patina of the binding. The presence of a stack of loose sheets, partially visible to the right of the book, is also discernible, but they do not appear to be an integral part of the presented book. The environment, consisting of a round wooden table and an antique bookcase in the background, accentuates the historical character of the object.
The spine of the book, the only clearly legible element, bears the inscription: "Jogand – La Belle Arlésienne." No other text or illustration is visible on the upper cover or edges, apart from signs of wear and rubbing.
This volume, by its visual appearance, can be described as an antique work or an antique bound book, typical of heritage libraries or 19th-century book collections.
