Description

This lot consists of a block of identical, undivided French stamps, each with a face value of 2 centimes. Each stamp features a classic female portrait, wearing a Phrygian cap and holding a caduceus, a traditional emblem of medicine and commerce. The inscription "RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE" is clearly visible at the top of each stamp, along with "POSTES" and the value "2c" at the bottom right. This block comprises 30 stamps arranged in 6 columns and 5 rows, all in a dark green hue leaning towards grey, typical of some French issues from the mid-20th century.

The left side margin, as well as the top margin, are visible and show regular perforations, indicating that it is an undivided sheet fragment. The edges of the block show a clean cut, with an intact strip of gummed paper at the top, suggesting that these stamps have never been used or cancelled. The surface of the stamps reveals a finely engraved pattern, characteristic of classic modern French issues.

The design is centered around the figure of Marianne, the iconic symbol of the French Republic, here depicted in a neoclassical style. The background of the stamp is adorned with fine cross-hatching, enhancing the engraved appearance of the visual. No major defects are observable on the visible side: no creases, stains, or apparent tears on the stamps or the margin.

The lot is presented on a neutral background, allowing for good legibility of the graphic details. The corners of the block are sharp, and the perforations appear regular and well-defined around the entire visible perimeter of the block. The overall presentation is homogeneous, ideal for philatelic use or album placement.

Condition

Used item, sold as is. The gum on the back is not visible in the image. The front shows no cancellation, creases, or major defects on the photographed stamps.

Did you know? The motif of Marianne holding the caduceus was used on various French stamps starting from the late 1940s. This symbol, designed by renowned engravers, embodies both the Republic and the spirit of public health, and was chosen to illustrate the stability of the French State after World War II.
