Set of 5 France 20c stamps featuring arts, sports, and botany themes
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
This lot includes five French postage stamps, shown in the photo, each featuring a distinct theme and a face value of 20 centimes. These stamps are carefully arranged in a transparent sleeve on an album page, offering a clear view of their illustrations and main inscriptions.
At the top, a stamp highlights a botanical motif illustrated by a colorful plant, accompanied by the inscription "PAR PELLETIER & CAVENTOU" and "SÉJOURNET DE LA QUININE". The design features vibrant colors, dominated by green, yellow, and brown tones, with a classic vertical layout typical of French issues.
The second stamp, on a gray and blue background, depicts a stylized archer, evoking an Olympic sport. The golden Olympic rings, the inscription "MUNICH 72", and the 20c face value are clearly visible, placing this stamp among the commemorative issues for the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.
The third stamp displays an artistic scene with two figures, in a graphic style reminiscent of classical painting. The inscription "RAYMOND RAVOUSSE" and a partially legible date appear in the upper left. The colors are subdued, with a dominance of dark green, black, and ochre.
The fourth stamp, in the bottom right, depicts an interior scene with a man in a suit reading a book. The decor suggests a 19th-century atmosphere, and the "20c" inscription is clearly visible in the bottom left on a gold background. The details of the furniture and clothing are finely rendered.
Finally, the last stamp, partially obscured, shows a blue motif reminiscent of a hot-air balloon, accompanied by legible inscriptions: "20c" and "BENNETT". The graphic style and colors evoke thematic issues on the history of aviation.
Condition
The stamps are used, presented in a plastic sleeve, with well-preserved colors and legible inscriptions. No major defects are visible on the front, but slight signs of handling or undulation may appear due to album storage.
Did you know? Some French stamps from the 1970s-1980s commemorate historical or scientific events, such as the introduction of quinine or the Munich Olympic Games. Thematic issues are particularly sought after for the diversity of their illustrations and the quality of their printing.
