Description

This lot consists of a set of postage stamps visible in the photo, mainly from the former issues of French West Africa. Several classic series are present, notably the "landscape" series, recognizable by their illustrations of local scenes and buildings, as well as a variety of distinct colors (blue, green, purple, red, orange). Some stamps bear inscriptions like "A.O.F." or "Afrique Occidentale Française" at the top or bottom of the effigy.

The stamps are arranged in individual transparent sleeves, slipped onto pink cardboard, which helps preserve their visible condition. A majority of the stamps appear unfranked (mint), but some seem to have been canceled. Readable face values include 10, 15, 20, 30, 40, 50, 75 centimes/francs, as well as a triangular blue stamp typical of commemorative issues from the region.

The visible side shows a carefully presented set, with stamps featuring well-defined perforations. Some examples show slight signs of wear or handling, while others appear to be in excellent condition. The diversity of colors and scenes depicted offers a glimpse into the colonial and exotic themes commonly illustrated on stamps of that period.

Several sleeves contain lots of similar stamps, suggesting the presence of duplicates or complete or semi-complete series. Also noted is the presence of a red "40 A percevoir" (40 to collect) tax type stamp, as well as other stamps for fiscal or postal use.

Some stamps have wide margins and crisp prints, while others show nuances in printing or slight off-centering, characteristic of philatelic production of the time. No major defects are visible on the entire lot on the front side, apart from a few slightly folded corners or edges on some examples.

Condition

Used item, sold as is, as visible in the photo. Some stamps show signs of use or cancellation, others are in mint condition. The set presents a beautiful diversity of appearances and colors.

Did you know? Stamps from French West Africa were issued starting in 1944 to consolidate colonial territories under a common postal administration. The "landscape" series are sought after for their detailed representations of local flora, fauna, and infrastructure, reflecting the colonial imagination of the era.
