Description

This lot features a varied selection of cancelled Australian stamps, presented on an album page. The collection includes over thirty distinct stamps, all from Australia, showcasing a beautiful diversity of visual themes.

Clearly visible motifs include royal portraits (depictions of Queen Elizabeth II and King George VI in particular), emblematic Australian animals (kangaroo, platypus, bird, coral fish, water dragon, rodent), as well as flowers, plants, and artistic scenes. Several stamps boast vibrant colours: blue, green, orange, red, purple, and brown dominate the palette. Some stamps are illustrated with artworks or scenes from daily life, such as a stamp depicting a painting titled "The Holy Family" or an artist's portrait.

The face values vary, ranging from 2d to 60c, with mentions of "POSTAGE", "AUSTRALIA", or postal service indications. Several early issues are visible, among which are stamps featuring sovereigns, animal and floral series, as well as marine themes (coral fish, "humbug fish"). The cancellations are clear and diverse, with circular or linear postmarks, some mentioning Australian cities.

The presentation on the album page protects the stamps under a transparent strip. The general condition is used, with visible signs of wear related to cancellation. Some stamps show slight traces of handling or patina, typical of a lot of circulated stamps.

This lot illustrates the richness of Australian philately, both in the variety of themes and the graphic diversity of its issues. It will be perfectly suitable for study, decoration, or to enrich a thematic assortment on Australian fauna, flora, and postal history.

Did you know? Australia issued its first stamp in 1913, the famous "Kangaroo and Map". The thematic series on Australian fauna and flora are among the most appreciated for their graphic richness and their representation of endemic species.
