Lot of French colonies Africa Overseas animal RF cancelled stamps
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
This lot consists of 21 old postage stamps from various French colonies, displayed on an album page. The set includes stamps from Reunion, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, New Caledonia, French Guiana, French Southern and Antarctic Lands, French Equatorial Africa, and French West Africa. The stamps feature various illustrations, including many animal motifs, exotic scenes, portraits, and tropical landscapes, characteristic of 20th-century French colonial issues.
Some stamps bear inscriptions such as "RF," "POSTES," or "France Libre," highlighting their origin and historical context. Several face values are visible (e.g., 0.25, 0.30, 0.50, 1F, 4F, 5F, 8F, 10F, 15F, 50F), as well as inscriptions specific to each territory. The colors are varied: blue, red, green, brown, orange, purple, with nuances typical of prints from that era. Animal illustrations depict birds, fish, zebras, and mammals, while other stamps feature allegories or scenes of local life.
The stamps are mostly canceled, some bearing partially legible postmarks. The perforations appear complete or slightly damaged on the visible side. The paper shows a natural patina and some signs of use, characteristic of old stamps stored in an album.
Noteworthy are stamps featuring the albatross (Southern Lands), marine motifs (Saint-Pierre and Miquelon), tropical animals (New Caledonia, French Equatorial Africa), as well as issues on the fauna and flora of overseas territories. Several stamps bear legends such as "France Libre," indicating their issue during the Second World War period.
The geographical and thematic diversity of this lot makes it a representative collection of French colonial philately. The illustrations combine detailed engravings, typical scenes, and republican symbols. Each stamp reflects a fragment of postal and cultural history linked to its territory of origin.
