Lot of France stamps 1940s Pétain blocks mint canceled philately
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
This lot consists of several French stamps from the World War II era, mainly from the 1940s, presented on an album page. The visible stamps feature effigies of Marshal Philippe Pétain, as well as architectural motifs depicting a tower or bell tower, typical of issues from the period known as the French State.
At the top of the page, there is a horizontal strip of five distinct stamps, alternating portraits of Pétain and graphic symbols, in shades of blue, red, and pink. The "Postes Françaises" mentions are clearly legible, as are various face values (2 F, 1 F+10, 2 F+12). The colors are clear, and the printing remains precise despite their age.
To the left, an isolated reddish-brown stamp also features Pétain's portrait, this time canceled. Next to it, a block of four blue stamps (4 F value) shows the same portrait, with a sheet margin and the printed date "15.5.42" on the edge, indicating an issue from May 1942.
The lower part of the page presents two blocks of four green stamps (10 F each), illustrating a stylized bell tower against a cloudy sky. The "POSTES FRANÇAISES" mention is clearly printed, accompanied by the signature "ANDRÉ SPIELMANN," a recognized engraver of that era. The blocks bear marginal dates "2.9.42," typical of printings from that period.
The stamps are mounted on a white page, some with sheet margins and dated inscriptions, which allows for a better appreciation of their condition and typology. No visible hinges; the blocks appear to be in good overall condition, with well-preserved colors. One stamp appears canceled, while the others seem new with no cancellation marks on the visible face.
Condition
Used condition, sold as is. Presence of one canceled stamp; the other copies appear uncanceled on the visible face, with apparent margins and perforations. Some possible handling marks, with no obvious structural defects on the visible face.
Did you know? Stamps featuring Philippe Pétain were issued between 1941 and 1944 under the Vichy regime. The dated margins allow for precise identification of the printing period, a detail appreciated for the philatelic study of issues from this troubled era.
