Lot of old French stamps, used and new, Philately De Gaulle Pétain
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
This lot consists of several French postage stamps, mainly from the mid-20th century, as seen in the photo. Several iconic series are visible, including stamps featuring General De Gaulle and Marshal Pétain, as well as regional stamps illustrating the coats of arms of French cities such as Nancy, Lille, Rouen, Marseille, Rennes, Bordeaux, and Montpellier. The stamps are presented on an album page, mostly as single copies or in blocks of four, which highlights the diversity of this lot.
Colors range from red to blue, including violet, green, and shades of brown or gray. The visuals include portraits, coats of arms, buildings, and heraldic motifs. Several face values are legible, such as 4 F, 4.50 F, 15 F, 40 c, 50 F, 70 c, 80 c, 1 F, 2.50 F, 5 F, 6 F, 15 F, 30 c, 40 c, 60 c, 70 c, and 80 c, as well as surcharges (e.g., “+10c”).
Some stamps are cancelled (cancellation marks visible on some copies), while others appear mint, with no apparent hinge on the visible side. The multiple stamps (blocks of 4) are well-centered, and the perforations appear crisp and regular. The prints are clear, the colors well-preserved, and the motifs remain perfectly legible.
Commemorative stamps are also noted, particularly those depicting the "Grand Séminaire de Meaux 1942" building (value 15 F), as well as local or semi-postal issues (mentioning cities or coats of arms). The variety of themes – historical figures, cities, architecture – enriches this lot and allows for several avenues of philatelic research.
The presentation on a white album page highlights each stamp, facilitating visual identification and comparison of the different stamps. No major defects are visible on the exposed sides, apart from some cancellation marks and slight variations in shade due to age.
Condition
Used stamp lot, sold as is. Presence of cancelled and uncancelled stamps. The visible sides show no missing parts, tears, or major defects. Some cancellation marks and slight wear on certain edges, typical of a lot from this period.
Did you know? The stamp featuring Marshal Pétain was issued in France during the Second World War, between 1941 and 1944, under the Vichy regime. These issues are now philatelic testimonies of French postal history during this particular period.
