Lot of canceled France stamps Semeuse Ceres PA 1920-40 philately
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
This lot consists of several old French postage stamps, all postmarked, carefully presented on an album page. The collection mainly includes stamps featuring the famous Sower effigy, one of the emblematic series of French philately, as well as examples with the effigy of Ceres. There are also two stamps from the "Airmail" series (POSTES FRANCE AMERICAN LEGEND / AMERICAN CONNECTION SEPTEMBER 1939 and 1945), recognizable by their engraved illustration and horizontal format.
The visible stamps cover different face values (e.g., 25c, 40c, 50c, 65c, 90c, 2f), with a predominance of the "Sower" series (in orange, violet, green, blue, gray, pink, etc.), whose motif depicts a female allegory sowing against the light. Several examples bear "50c" surcharges or partially legible postmarks, with mentions of French cities (e.g., "PARIS" postmark). The two airmail stamps are illustrated with allegorical scenes and bear specific mentions related to the France-America connection.
Some stamps show signs of wear related to handling (sometimes irregular perforated edges, slight marks or partial erasures on the surface), typical of postmarked stamps from this period. The diversity of colors and face values illustrates the richness of French issues from the early to mid-20th century. No new stamps are visible in this lot; all are postmarked, with varying postal cancellations.
Also observed are stamps from the "Ceres" series (notably in red) and variations of the Sower in different colors (violet, blue, orange, green). The inscriptions "RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE" and "POSTES" are clearly visible on most examples. The lot is presented on a white-background album page, with no precise date indicated on the reverse.
Condition

Did you know? The Sower is an allegorical figure created by Oscar Roty, engraved on French stamps starting in 1903. She symbolizes the Republic sowing light and progress. The Sower series has seen numerous variations in colors, values, and printing types, and remains one of the most emblematic motifs of French philately.
