Lot of France stamps, landscapes, monuments, cancelled, old philately
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
This lot consists of 40 canceled French postage stamps, all presented on a dedicated album page. Each stamp highlights a monument, natural site, or emblematic city of France, illustrated in an engraved style typical of mid-20th century philately. The dominant colors are blue, red, purple, and green, with varied shades depending on the issues. The illustrations feature landscapes, castles, cathedrals, bridges, or urban panoramas, with great detail.
The stamps visible in the photo include face values from 0.15 F to 1 F, and several series dedicated to famous sites: Lourdes, Carcassonne, Ajaccio, Royan, Vallée de la Rance, Antibes, Evian-les-Bains, as well as representations of monuments such as the Château de Chambord, Chartres Cathedral, or the Citadel of Carcassonne. The mention "RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE" appears on each stamp at the top or bottom, accompanied by the face value and sometimes a descriptive legend of the represented site.
The sheet shows a diversity of horizontal rectangular formats, with some variations in dimensions between series. Cancellations are visible on each stamp, mainly in the form of round or partial postmarks, typical of stamps that have traveled. Some postmarks show dates or fragments of city names, adding to the historical character of the set.
The presentation on a white page clearly shows the printing quality and graphical details. Note the presence of several duplicates, particularly for the 0.70 F stamps illustrating an identified monument. The colors remain vibrant for the majority of the stamps, although some specimens show slight fading or a patina of use, characteristic of canceled stamps from this era.
The selection offers a representative overview of French philatelic production focused on regional and architectural heritage, with varied motifs: religious buildings, coastal landscapes, mountains, and historical sites. Some stamps bear specific inscriptions such as "CARCASSONNE", "AJACCIO", "ROYAN", "LOURDES", "MÉDÉA", or "ÉVIAN-LES-BAINS", allowing for precise identification of each visible piece.
