Description

This lot brings together a varied collection of used postage stamps from Hong Kong, carefully arranged on a black backing. The visible collection includes several dozen stamps of various sizes and colors, mainly issued between the second half of the 20th century and the turn of the 1990s. The visuals alternate between portraits of Queen Elizabeth II, iconic landscapes, monuments, marine animals, cultural scenes, and historic buildings of Hong Kong.

Many stamps feature the profile of Queen Elizabeth II, in various chromatic variations (violet, orange, blue, green, red, brown), some with a clearly visible face value in Hong Kong dollars (e.g., $1, $2, $5, $10). Several stamps depict thematic motifs: fish, hedgehog, traditional architecture, local festivals, as well as daily life scenes or urban modernity. Some stamps are illustrated with graphic artworks, female portraits, or references to specific events (exhibitions, anniversaries, commemorations).

The diversity of cancellations attests to real postal circulation, each stamp bearing a distinct cancellation mark, sometimes well-defined, sometimes more discreet. Some stamps show regular perforated edges, while others have more irregular contours, typical of manual cutting or repeated use.

The color palette is particularly rich, ranging from delicate pastel tones to vibrant and contrasting colors. This visual diversity illustrates the iconographic richness of Hong Kong philately, with varied themes such as marine fauna, colonial architecture, historical figures, and major cultural events. Inscriptions in English and Chinese are clearly visible on most stamps.

Among the examples, there are commemorative issues and definitive stamps, some with artistic illustrations, others more sober and institutional. Face values range from a few cents to several dollars, reflecting different periods of issue and various postal uses.

Condition

These stamps are used and sold as is, with visible cancellations and some signs of wear or handling inherent to their postal use. The set shows good legibility of motifs and inscriptions, despite cancellation marks and handling on some pieces.

Did you know? Hong Kong stamps bearing the profile of Elizabeth II reflect the postal history of the British colony until the handover in 1997. The thematic and linguistic diversity of these issues testifies to the cultural uniqueness of Hong Kong, at the crossroads of East and West.
