AFW - Antique France Worldwide

Description

This lot consists of several antique postage stamps mainly from India and the Indian subcontinent, visible on a philatelic album page. The stamps display a variety of colors, ranging from red, violet, orange, blue, green to black, with pastel or more vibrant shades depending on the issues. Several of them bear circular or linear cancellations, attesting to their actual postal use. We can distinguish stamps from the "Republic of India", "French Establishments in India" issues, as well as overprinted stamps from Pakistan and Bangladesh. Some examples feature architectural illustrations, portraits of historical figures, or emblematic motifs of South Asia.

The stamps are neatly aligned in transparent strips on a white lined album page, typical of philatelic albums. A variety of issues are visible, including several service stamps ("SERVICE" or "OFFICIAL" mention), different face values (from 1 paisa to 30 np, 0.10 to 5 Rs, etc.), as well as visible overprints such as "Bangladesh" or "Relais". Some feature inscriptions in English, Hindi, or Urdu, reflecting the cultural and historical diversity of this region.

The page also includes some stamps from neighboring countries or territories historically linked to the British Empire, such as Trinidad & Tobago, as well as a stamp with the mention "Établissements Français de l’Inde", which enriches the collection with colonial and post-colonial variations. Several stamps highlight monuments, historical scenes, or effigies of rulers, including George VI and other official figures.

The visible stamps generally have regular margins, some with well-defined perforations. The colors remain vibrant for the majority, although a few examples show signs of wear or slight discoloration due to their age and postal handling. Cancellations are generally clear, sometimes partially faded, but overall legibility remains good for identifying the issues.

This lot offers a representative overview of philately in the Indian subcontinent, with a variety of issues covering the period from the end of British colonization to the first decades of independence for India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. The diversity of motifs, languages, and face values makes it an eclectic collection, perfect for exploring the postal history of this dynamic region.
