Description

This lot consists of three bound volumes titled The Pictorial Bible, an edition dated 1836 according to the keyword information. The books are presented upright, showing their thick spines structured by raised bands. Each spine features a black label with the golden title "THE PICTORIAL BIBLE" and the volume number in Roman numerals ("VOL. I", "VOL. II", "VOL. III"). The significant patina and binding style indicate typical 19th-century craftsmanship, with a classic English aesthetic and sober ornamentation.

The visible covers show significant wear: the surface of the spines exhibits cracks, scuffs, stains, and material loss, particularly on the headcaps and upper corners. The leather texture, likely original, is heavily marked by age, with brown hues and lighter areas resulting from rubbing and exposure. The golden titles and volume numbers remain partially legible despite the fading of the gilt. No illustrated decorations or patterns are visible on the exposed parts, which corresponds to a utilitarian and scholarly edition.

The three volumes form a coherent set, aligned on a dark wooden surface, with natural light highlighting the reliefs and antique appearance of the bindings. No other elements (dust jacket, slipcase, title page, decorated edges) are visible in this photo. The overall condition clearly reflects the age, use, and frequent handling typical of 19th-century reference works.

The visible inscriptions are all in English, confirming a British edition. The massive appearance of the works and the structuring of the spines with gilt fillets refer to the tradition of artisanal English binding from the Victorian era. This complete three-volume edition is rarely offered on the market in its entirety, especially in this original condition.

Condition

Used books, sold as-is. The spines show pronounced signs of wear: cracks, rubbing, missing leather, faded gilding, damaged headcaps and corners. The titles remain legible despite the defects. The edges, covers, and interior of the volumes are not visible in this photo.
