Description

This antique fabric features jacquard brocade velvet work on one visible side, in deep green tones enhanced with stylized floral motifs in white and pale yellow. The design is punctuated by large six-petalled flowers, surrounded by sinuous foliage and small stars or florets, harmoniously distributed over the entire surface. The whole displays a great fineness of execution, characteristic of antique liturgical or religious textiles. The outlines of the motifs are clean, with a slight relief effect typical of brocade on velvet, which adds depth to both touch and sight.

The rectangular piece has visible serged edges, ensuring the textile's good hold. The general appearance shows a beautiful fiber density, with a regular weave and a discreet sheen characteristic of velvet. The deep and nuanced green background highlights the light-colored motifs, while golden or pale yellow touches emphasize certain details, accentuating the ornamental liturgical character of the fabric.

The central motif, composed of small groups of stars or five-pointed flowers, evokes the traditional decorative codes of religious fabrics, often used for altar ornaments, chasubles, or church hangings. The composition is balanced, without excess, with a refined graphic effect.

The visible surface shows no major signs of wear or apparent stains. The velvet texture appears well-preserved, with a beautiful luster retained on light-exposed areas. The colors remain vibrant and deep, a sign of careful maintenance or storage away from direct light.

This textile is typical of ancient liturgical fabrics, made using the jacquard technique, highly appreciated for the richness of its motifs and the durability of its fibers. It would be perfectly suited for decorative use, framing, textile restoration, or for the reconstruction of religious ornaments.

Did you know? The jacquard brocade velvet technique, invented at the beginning of the 19th century, enabled the manufacture of liturgical fabrics with complex patterns thanks to a mechanical loom. These fabrics were traditionally used for making religious garments and church ornaments, particularly in France and Italy.
